BACGROUND: The aim of this study is to examine in depth the role of religion and spirituality in the re-adaptation processes of young adults who survived the earthquake, a large-scale natural disaster of the 20th century. The study focuses on understanding the role of spirituality as a coping resource in individuals' post-traumatic psychological recovery and resilience processes. It offers a unique contribution to the literature by shedding light on the cultural dimension of spiritual coping mechanisms in the Turkish context. It is also valuable for providing important implications for considering spirituality-based approaches in psychosocial intervention programs.METHODS: Phenomenological research design, which is a qualitative research design, was used in this study. This qualitative research was conducted with 22 volunteer earthquake survivor nursing students. Interviews were conducted via WhatsApp. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method.RESULTS: In the analysis of the data, two themes (the effects of the earthquake and religious and spiritual practices to cope with the earthquake) and five sub-themes (social, physical, spiritual, religious practices, spirituality and coping) were identified.CONCLUSION: As a result of this study, it was determined that individuals in the disaster of the century were affected psychosocially and had difficulty in coping with the earthquake they experienced. In addition, it was determined that individuals benefited from religious and spiritual practices to cope with these problems.
