UNLABELLED: This study examines the language and subjective experience of change during recovery from disordered gaming, as expressed by individuals in an online support community. We analyzed 22,459 unique texts (1963 posts and 20,496 comments) drawn from a Reddit online self-help community dedicated to disordered gaming. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), we identified data-driven topics, then aligned them to the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) through reflexive thematic analysis and netnography, and validated patterns with sentiment analysis and engagement metrics. Seven themes consistently appeared: escapism, guilt and regret, relationship strain, identity issues, health deterioration, desire for moderation, and search for replacement activities. These themes cut across multiple TTM stages, showing that recovery is fluid and cyclical, not a straight line. Community language was moderately positive overall, acknowledging frustration and anxiety while expressing hope and mutual support, indicating the subreddit often functions as an empowering support system. Findings affirm TTM’s relevance for understanding disordered gaming and underscore the value of social connection and creative self-regulation in recovery. We recommend that readiness assessments and interventions reflect the shifting, story-driven nature of these journeys. Results also support online peer-support communities as scalable, low-barrier mental health resources grounded in authentic participant voices.SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1038/s41598-025-33991-8.
